MOON OF FIRST SNOW

NAMA Nominee
Best Instrumental Record

Debuted at #12 on New Age Voice Magazine's "Airwaves Top 100"

SEVEN RAVENS - One day I was overwhelmed by all of the suffering in this world.  So I went for a walk in the woods to ease my mind. When a Raven landed in the tree above me I began to sing the chorus of this song, playing the drum part with my hands upon my knees.  That night I dreamt the verse and awoke to find Seven Ravens sitting on my fence reminding me that the Great Mystery is still at work, the Divine Creator is still asking me to lean towards the light, to walk towards love.

TIME OF LONG NIGHTS - The night goes on and on.  Sleep eludes me once again.  I walk around my darkness.  I walk around my silence.  I wait. Through my Time of Long Nights, I wait for your return.

WATER FROM HEAVEN - For all the beautiful women that have passed through my life.  For those that took my breath away without knowing.  For those who crossed my way with a smile.  For those who paused for a kiss, and to those blessed ones that allowed our paths to become one.  I have been the desert and you have been my Water From Heaven.

MOON OF FIRST SNOW - If I divide my life into the seasons, I see that I am well into Fall, somewhere near the Moon of First Snow.  I look back at my memories – the accomplishments and miracles, the mistakes and losses, the gentle hand of the Creator guiding me along the way.  I think of those things that comfort me today and those things I long for still.  And I look to tomorrow, with the belief that my best days are ahead - looking forward to my Moon of First Snow.

BELOVED - I will hold your blanket when you go to join the circle of your sisters.  When the cold winds of your winter come, I will be your shelter, the keeper of your fire.  As your days turn to years and your years fall away, I will be the one standing with you.  To share laughter and joy, to bring strength when fear surrounds, it is I.  And from the moment that we finally find each other, I will always walk the trail beside you, my Beloved.

MORNING STORM - I lie awake listening to the wind and rain.  Safe inside my shelter, warm and dry.  Choosing the softer easier way, avoiding the dangers of the day.  Arise, arise I tell myself, face bravely the storms outside you, walk through the dark clouds to the sun-filled sky.  For it is only a Morning Storm.

CHEROKEE MORNING SONG - This is a traditional Cherokee song.  My arrangement in 4-part harmony uses 3 Native American flutes and a contemporary silver bass flute.  I have heard it performed as a round-style song.  Mid-way through the arrangement the main flute melody is played in the round-style.  I hope that I have honored this piece.

OGINALI EFV - Roughly translated as "my friend the dog" – Nali for short - my great teacher of unconditional love who masquerades as a golden retriever.  Whether proudly leading the way down the mountain trail or sleeping in the warm sun he shows me how to be content with living completely in the moment. He doesn't care what I do or what I look like.  He doesn't concern himself with my nationality, my religion, or the size of my bank account.  His job seems to be to take as many naps as possible and to just love me in between.  This piece was written with him in mind, to honor those qualities in Oginali Efv, my friend the dog, that often seem so lacking in myself.

WIND IN THE LEAVES - When the snow falls upon the mountain peaks you wrap your warm arms around me.  Where the deep blue sea rolls to meet the white sands of the shore I can almost see your face.  In the desert wastelands where the silences between my own breaths overwhelm me, I feel your touch.  And in the tree-lined meadows I hear you whisper my name through the Wind in the Leaves.

HYMN OF PEACE - We are all the same.  We all laugh.  We all cry.  Our hearts beat and send blood through our veins the same regardless of the color of our skin or the country of our birth.  I am simply a human being, the same as any other anywhere on this planet.  You and I are both children of the Earth.  Yet wars plague us, religions separate us, and greed destroys us.  And those that have heard the Hymn Of Peace have been so few.

TO LOVE AND BE LOVED - I have heard it said that after the basic needs for survival are met, the one thing human beings desire most is To Love and Be Loved.  The chorus for this was given to me while I was playing in an Algonkian clan adoption ceremony.  It was intended for all those who have lost love or a loved one, as well as for those who have never found love yet continue to search for it.  The verse conveys a sense of sadness and loss, while the chorus rings of hope and the joy that one day the lost shall meet again and love will return.

EAGLE FLYING HIGH - There is a story told of the Eagle Flying High above a mighty river.  The Eagle sees the river cut through solid rock, race through narrow passes, slowly overcome obstacles in its way – creating a beautiful meandering blue trail towards the sea.  We are the river, sometimes when we are bogged down and our waters run slow and muddy we think that is all there is, but from the Eagle's perspective, it is but one small bend in an incredible journey.
